Gilded Splinters (Devices I), 2014
Digitized 16mm film with No Jets soundtrack by Matt Hanner, graphite wall drawing, and terra-cotta and gold-leaf sculptures
Dimensions vary

This multi-component installation was inspired by an unconventional collaboration around No Jets, the late Chicago artist Matt Hanner’s audio-verité recording of the sound of no airplanes flying over a major flight path into O’Hare Airport outside of Chicago after being grounded as a result of the 9/11 tragedy. Presented within one exhibition, Gilded Splinters (Devices I) features Matt Hanner’s No Jets playing over a three-hour 16mm film of cherry blossom trees set against the sky; graphite wall drawing, and hundreds of small terra-cotta and gold-leaf sculptures arranged in patterns on the floor. Concerned with the messy binary of absence and presence, this project contextualizes individual activities as real and important aspects of collective narratives.

Hosting institution: Greenlease Gallery, Rockhurst University, Kansas City, MO.
