HEAD (devices III) transforms the interior of Actual Size into a mock TV studio, on view to the public through the gallery’s storefront windows. The mod set and its dressing, which references 1960's and 70's variety show music sets, explores the gallery space as site of potential performance and category defying installation. The central focus of HEAD (devices III) is a stage that simultaneously evokes a concert about to begin as well as a sculptural memorial to outmoded methods of cultural production.  As the third installation in Academy Record’s “devices” series, HEAD (devices III) continues an investigation of the distribution of culture through a focus on the physical structures and platforms created for performance. A series of performance events called "Academy Records Variety Show" were organized by the Actual Size curators and LA musician and performer Bryan Brown. A subsequent video installation featuring the variety show and titled HEAD (devices III) was featured in Western Exhibitions' HEAD exhibition in Chicago.
